Event Details

North Texas Performing Arts – Plano is proud to present Once on this Island directed by Mike Mazur, managing director of North Texas Performing Arts – Plano. Mike earned his master’s in musical theatre writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and directed over 60 shows in New York, New Jersey, California and Ohio before joining NTPA in 2015.

Mike’s shows are always actor and character driven. “My vision for a show always starts with the characters,” said Mike Mazur. “As an actor myself, I believe that you have to understand the character you’re playing in order to tell their story. I work with my actors on learning the ins and outs of their character, by not only thinking about what the character might do or feel, but doing research into the time period, what monetary and social class their character would have been in, and the area they would have lived. When they know those things about the character, they can use that information to guide them on acting choices throughout the story, which allows them to tell a story that is authentic and moving.” Mike uses his acting and teaching skills to bring out “the truth” from the actors to make their characters come to life. This story is about people with different beliefs coming together, as Mike says, “Ultimately, this show is about tolerance, love and forgiveness, things we need to model for society, especially today.”

Dee Dee Munson is the dance choreographer for Once on This Island, and her unique style really makes this show move. This play is an adventure for the whole family.

The Award-winning Once on This Islandcomes from the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Anastasia). This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score.

Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune’s life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel’s heart, and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.
