The ArtCentre of Plano, in collaboration with the Junior League of Collin County, will host a Family event on August 25, 2018, at the ArtCentre, 902 E. 16th Street, Plano 75074 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The event serves to introduce families to the outstanding Kinsey Collection’s Harlem Renaissance Exhibition on view until September 22. Activities, including make and take projects for children and tours of the exhibition, will be available.
Shannon Kmak, President of the Junior League of Collin County said, “We are proud to partner with the ArtCentre to showcase this exhibition representing an important part of American history. We encourage everyone throughout the community to participate in Family Day to experience this one-of-a-kind collection.”
To further enhance opportunities for students to experience the Harlem Renaissance exhibition, Atmos Energy will sponsor educational field trips to the ArtCentre for students from Plano ISD. Jan Rugg of Atmos Energy said, “This exhibition captures important aspects of American history that all Americans should be aware of. We are proud to partner with the ArtCentre and Plano ISD to enhance students’ awareness of this era.”
With education as a goal, The Kinsey African American Art and History Collection has been on national tour since 2007, and has been seen by over 6 million visitors. The collection has exhibited in 24 cities, at notable institutions such as the California African American Museum, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (Cincinnati), The DuSable Museum of African American History (Chicago), The Norton Museum of Art (West Palm Beach), and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (Washington, D.C.), to name a few. To date, over 6 million people have visited the exhibit. Currently, a portion of the collection is on display at EPCOT, Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida until 2018 (opened in 2013), where an estimated 15-20 million visitors will see it. The exhibit made its international debut in Hong Kong, at the University of Hong Kong Museum and Gallery on December 8, 2016. Celebrities and personalities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Morgan Freeman, Kerry Washington, Katie Couric, Lance Gross, Diane Sawyer and Angela Bassett have endorsed and lent support in the exposure of the collection.
