Event Details

UT Dallas is offering a college-preparation camp for high school students that is focused on helping the students write, speak and present themselves better.

The Arts and Humanities College Prep Camp is primarily focused on communication skills for students who will be interviewing, preparing college application essays, and writing resumes for college.

The camp will be held the week of July 30 from 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm. Each session provides 15 hours of preparation.

The sessions will be led by Dr. Carie King, a clinical professor of communication at UT Dallas, and Dr. Melissa Hernandez-Katz, a senior lecturer in communication at UT Dallas.

“Students think college admissions and scholarships are all about test scores, but it’s really not,” said King. Hernandez-Katz said changing social communication standards make it more difficult for some students to switch to a more formal approach when necessary.

“Students text a lot, and they often become very relaxed in their texts. Sometimes that comes across in their emails so that when they’re emailing an admissions director, or a person in charge of awarding a scholarship, they can be too informal,” she said.
